Russian short-range ballistic missile, core of the missile strikes on Ukraine

Russia's main tactical ballistic system: a mobile wheeled TEL (9P78-1) carrying two solid-propellant 9M723 missiles. The missile flies a flat, quasi-ballistic trajectory, manoeuvres in the terminal phase and can release decoys, so warning time is short and interception is practically only possible with Patriot PAC-3. The system also fires the Iskander-K cruise missiles (9M727/9M728). Since 2022 it has been used daily against Ukrainian cities, energy and military targets, often from the border regions of Kursk, Bryansk and Belgorod. According to Ukrainian Defence Intelligence (HUR), Russia produces 60–70 a month and in summer 2026 used the 9M723-2 ('Iskander-1000') with ≈ 550 km range against Kyiv for the first time. Ukraine estimates the stockpile at only ≈ 100 (Sep 2026) and sees Russia using cheaper RM-48Us (S-400) to conserve Iskanders. Teardowns found 140+ foreign components per missile, 62 of them US-made.
