One-Way Attack (OWA)
IR / RU

Mass-employed, long-range single-use attack drone

A cheap, mass-produced OWA drone with substantial range (~$35k to manufacture). The jet-powered Geran-4 variant is considerably faster; the Geran-5 flies faster and higher. Some units are armed with an R-60 air-to-air missile or a MANPAD seeker against intercepting helicopters, aircraft and interceptor drones.

Scale
3,000–5,000 launches/month (peak ~1,400/week mid-2026; in early Oct. 2026 Zelenskyy reported >1,900 attack drones in a single week, ~800 of them jet-powered — source: Kyiv Independent, RU Mil Tracker e-20261005-03). The Russian goal of a 50% jet-powered share cited by Syrskyi (Jun. 2026) is reached by late Aug. 2026: in its full August tally the Ukrainian Air Force counts >2,800 jet-powered UAV launches (June ~350, July ~1,500), with some attacks ~half of the long-range drones; Zelenskyy earlier cited ~800 of ~1,500 drones (~53%) as jet-powered over four days — source: RU Mil Tracker e-20260831-01 (Ukrainska Pravda / ArmyInform, 5 Sep. 2026). September 2026: per Zelenskyy (26 Sep.) >2,730 jet-powered launches, roughly level with August. Zelenskyy further claims Russia plans to spend $12bn in 2027 solely on jet drones and loitering munitions (no substantiation published) — source: Ukrainska Pravda, RU Mil Tracker e-20260927-03. According to a CSIS and George W. Bush Institute report (14 Oct 2026), about 12,000 North Korean workers assemble Shahed/Geran drones at Alabuga, with Pyongyang taking 70–90% of their wages; the headcount rests largely on Ukrainian intelligence — source: Militarnyi, RU Mil Tracker e-20261022-06; not independently confirmed
Variants
Geran-2/3/4/5 — progressively faster/higher; Geran-5 a high-altitude variant
Interception rate
Combined shot down/electronically suppressed fell from 95–98% (winter 2025/26, propeller Shahed) to ~88% (27 Aug.) and ~79% (31 Aug. 2026), due to the growing share of jet Gerans that cheap interceptor drones cannot keep up with. Single attack 4–5 Sep. 2026: 128 of 167 Shaheds shot down/suppressed (~77%) — one night, not a trend figure — source: RU Mil Tracker e-20260831-01 (Meduza / Ukrainska Pravda, 1 Sep. 2026; ArmyInform, 5 Sep. 2026). First figure separating the variants (Zelenskyy, 26 Sep. 2026, September tally): jet Shahed ~55% (>1,500 of >2,730 shot down/jammed), propeller Shahed >90% — Ukrainian claim, not independently verified — source: Ukrainska Pravda, RU Mil Tracker e-20260927-03
Adaptation
CRPA antennas against jamming; R-60 or MANPAD armament against interceptors; since Aug. 2026 (reported) also an EW jammer that overpowers the video link of approaching interceptor drones at ~5.8 GHz, instead of kinetic interception — source: Euromaidan Press, RU Mil Tracker e-20260826-05. Control of the Geran-5 runs (partly) via Russian MESH radio networks; according to an adviser to the Ukrainian president, no systematic EW countermeasure was fielded against this for about a year — source: Euromaidan Press, RU Mil Tracker e-20260922-13
Onboard camera (Geran-4)
Forensically confirmed after deadly strikes on Chernihiv (26 Jul. and 24 Aug. 2026) — possibly terminal-phase target recognition, not yet fully characterised
Mothership (FPV, 2026, disputed)
Some propeller Geran-2s carry two wing-mounted FPV drones released deep in the Ukrainian rear (flown over cellular networks/SIM) to extend short-range FPV reach. Configuration confirmed several times (incl. Darknode shootdown, March 2026); adviser 'Flash' says it rarely succeeds — source: RU Mil Tracker e-20260904-06 (Euromaidan Press / Militarnyi)
